Everything You Should Know about Packing: Tips for a Stress-Free Move

When we are planning a move, one of the most important factors we need to think about is packing, which is true for any type of move, regardless if we are moving house or moving an office. Packing is undoubtedly one of the most difficult tasks in any move, and it can take up a lot of your time as well. But before you begin this laborious task, there are some things you can do to make it easier on yourself.

Plan early

The best thing you can do when it comes to packing your items is to plan early. The thing about packing is that it often takes longer than you expect at the beginning, and it is much better to have this chore over and done with at least a few days before your scheduled move. When planning this task, think carefully about the items you want to take with you and which items will need to be packed with care. Of course, you also need to plan which items you will not take with you, and this includes items to donate to charity, items to sell (either online or at a car boot sale), and items to throw away.

Make a list

Whilst you are planning how to pack your items and deciding which items to pack and discard, it will be easier if you make a list. List down all the items you prioritise as well as all items you would like to dispose of. At the same time, make a list of items per room, and make an estimate of how many boxes each room needs. When acquiring your packing boxes, it is better to get them in a variety of sizes as well.

Get the right packing materials

Whilst we’re on the subject of boxes, make sure that the boxes you choose are strong and sturdy and will be able to withstand the weight of heavier items. For this, it is best to choose boxes made from cardboard which is corrugated. However, if you are making use of a removal firm, they can also provide you with the appropriate boxes for your move (experts at removals in Gloucester like Andrews Movers & Storers will even dismantle and reassemble your furniture at your new location as a standard service).

When you purchase boxes, these will often be delivered without being assembled, so make sure to allot time for putting the boxes together as well, and make it a point to use plenty of tape so that your boxes are stronger.

You also have to consider other packing materials you may need, such as bubble wrap, newspapers, tape, blankets (for delicate furniture and appliances), ropes, plastic bags, and more.

Sort by room

When you begin packing, it is important to sort your items by room. Try to keep items from one room together, and label them accordingly, especially if they are delicate or heavy. It is also essential that you keep all your paper documents together in one box and open and unpack them as soon as you arrive at your new location.

Pack a special ‘necessities’ box

A day or two before your moving date, you should make it a priority to pack a special ‘necessities’ box which contains all your necessities for when you move in. This would include items such as coffee or tea; utensils, plates, and cups; snacks, and other kitchen or dining essentials. Of course, don’t forget to pack a bag with toiletry and clothing essentials as well, at least enough for a day or two.
